What Oportunly is

Oportunly is a tool students use to write to the people who hire, instead of applying through a portal. The student picks the companies, we find the person whose job relates to what they are after, we draft a short message from the student’s CV, and the student sends it from their own email or LinkedIn. The message you got was written for you, sent by that student, in their name.

What we know about you, and where it came from

Your name, your job title, your employer, the address of your public professional profile, and a work email address. Nothing else: no personal address, no private number, nothing sensitive.

It came from public professional sources: your public LinkedIn profile, your employer’s website, and, when a work address could not be confirmed from those, business contact databases that sell professional addresses. Each address is checked before a student is allowed to write to it.

Why we are allowed to

The legal basis is legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR): a student contacting a professional, at a professional address, about a professional matter, in low volume, with an easy way to say no. We keep it narrow on purpose. Only professional data, only people whose role plausibly relates to hiring or to the team the student is writing about, at most a handful of messages a day from any one student, and nothing more the moment you reply or ask to stop.

How to stop it

• Reply to the student and say so. One word is enough. That student stops writing to you the same day, in every campaign they run.
• Or write to us. privacy@oportunly.com. We delete your details from every list where they appear and mark your address so that nobody using Oportunly contacts you again. You do not need to explain why, and you do not need an account.

You can also ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or object to the processing. Same address. We answer within one month, which is the deadline the GDPR gives us.

How long we keep it

While you are on a student’s list, and no longer than the student’s account exists. If you ask us to stop, we keep only what is needed to make sure we never write to you again.
